Hey Classy People,

Class actions get a bad rap sometimes. People think they’re just about getting $4.82 from a company you barely remember buying from. But here’s the truth: class actions have helped clean up industries, protect consumers, and hold the big dogs accountable. 🐶💼 So this week, we’re shining a light on how these lawsuits have made real-world waves (yes, even the boring ones with long names). Let’s get into it 👇

Think class actions are just legal spam? Think again.

Here are some times class actions truly made history – and helped protect people just like you and me:

🔌 Enron Securities Fraud
After Enron collapsed in a blaze of accounting fraud glory, investors banded together and secured one of the largest settlements in U.S. history – over $7 BILLION. The case paved the way for stricter corporate accounting rules (hello, Sarbanes-Oxley).

🚬 Big Tobacco
In the ‘90s, multiple class action lawsuits led to a massive $206 billion settlement from major tobacco companies (ex. $PM ( ▲ 0.13% ) , $BTI ( ▲ 0.41% ) , $RAI ( ▼ 1.36% ) , etc.). It also forced them to stop marketing to kids and required more transparent health disclosures. So yes, class actions helped kill Joe Camel.

🚗 Volkswagen Emissions Scandal
Remember when VW ($VWAGY ( ▼ 2.82% ) ) said their “clean diesel” cars were super eco-friendly? Turns out...they weren’t. A class action helped return billions to consumers and sparked a broader crackdown on greenwashing in the auto industry.

📞 Equifax Data Breach
147 million people had their personal data leaked. A class action helped hold Equifax ($EFX ( ▼ 1.74% ) ) accountable, offering free credit monitoring and financial payouts. It also led to higher scrutiny on how companies store your info.

💳 Visa Mastercard Payment Card Settlement
Businesses accused Visa and Mastercard ($V ( ▼ 5.0% ) & $MA ( ▼ 4.62% ) ) of charging inflated credit card processing fees. After years of litigation, the 2025 settlement offered billions in relief to small and mid-sized businesses across the U.S. It’s one of the largest antitrust settlements in history – and a big win for the little guys trying to survive swipe fees.

🧾 TL;DR:
Class actions aren’t just legal background noise – they’ve literally made companies rethink how they do business. And while not every case is earth-shattering, you never know when that random email you ignore could actually be part of something bigger.

So next time you see a postcard in your mailbox? Maybe don’t toss it so fast. 📨

Class dismissed (and keep fighting the good fight).
