The Star Tribune’s been oversharing your video data… | Yarn.io
What Happened?
MN’s Star Tribune allegedly played fast and loose with the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by sharing subscribers’ personal identifiable information (PII) with Facebook via the Facebook Tracking Pixel—without your say-so! While they deny any wrongdoing (typical…), they've agreed to cough up a $2.9 million settlement.
Who’s Eligible?
You might just be in luck if you:
1. Had a Facebook account between July 7, 2020, and February 5, 2024.
2. Had a digital or home delivery subscription (with digital access) to the Star Tribune.
3. Watched videos on the Star Tribune’s website. (We hope you enjoyed the cat videos.)
What Do You Need to File with CAC?
To cash in on this settlement with CAC, you'll need your “Class Member ID” from an email sent by the Settlement Administrator. Hunt down “Notice of Kyle Feldman v. Star Tribune Media Company LLC Settlement” in your inbox to find this magical ID. Check out the image below to see what you’re looking for 👇️

Note: Whether you roll with CAC or go it alone, filing a claim form is the ONLY way to get paid.
What’s the Settlement Provide?
This settlement serves up both cash and changes, a delightful double-whammy:
Monetary Relief: A $2.9 million fund is up for grabs to pay you (and other claimants), cover settlement admin expenses, attorneys’ fees, and tosses in an incentive award to the Class Representative.
Prospective Changes: The Star Tribune has to hit the brakes on using the Facebook Tracking Pixel on video content pages—unless they get your consent or the VPPA gets a makeover (amended, repealed, or otherwise invalidated).
